Ernest joined the army following a short period employed in the shoe and boot making trade.
Following a gunshot wound to the head he was evacuated to the General Hospital at Camiers where he died of his wounds.
Corporal, Service No. 20782, Somerset Light Infantry, 1st Bt. He was the son of Frederick and Emma (nee Bray) Chivers of Paulton Rd., Midsomer Norton. In 1901 the family lived in the Island, Midsomer Norton and Frederick’s occupation was “coachman (domestic)”.
In 1911 Ernest who was born in Midsomer Norton was living at 13 The Island with his parents, two brother and two sisters being employed as a Shoe maker.
He was, like his brother a member of Miss Waugh’s Bible Class. Ernest enlisted in the town and died of wounds aged 23 on 24 April 1917 at Camiers Hospital and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery. Plot XIX, Row H, Grave 6. The inscription on the headstone reads “We asked for Life Thou gavest him a long life even for ever and ever”. Ernest’s name also appears on the memorial plaque in Midsomer Norton Cricket Club. Ernest also lost his brother Arthur Chivers.
