Geoffrey was only 22 when he was killed. His division suffered 7,728 casualties in action during the war, but such were the conditions at the front that the division lost far more than that number to sickness with malaria and dysentery.
In his Will he left 232 pounds I I shillings and 6 pence.
Geoffrey Miles Haydon, Captain, South Wales Borderers, 2nd Btn. He was the son of Mr. George Wilfred Murch and Mrs Ellen Emily (nee Miles) Haydon of Church Farm, Midsomer Norton. In 1911 the family lived at 17 Church sq., Midsomer Norton.
Geoffrey was a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a veterinary surgeon and inspector for the Petty Sessional Divisions of Kilmersdon, Temple Cloud and Shepton Mallet. He died of wounds 16 August 1917 aged 22 and is buried in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Plot X, Row E, Grave 16.
There is no inscription on the headstone. Geoffrey’s name is shown on the memorial plaque in Midsomer Norton Cricket Club.
